My name is Gerard Hynes.
I research literature written in the fantastic mode (both modern and medieval) and the construction of imaginary worlds in various media. This involves disreputable things like fantasy and science fiction, children’s literature, landscape and ecocriticism, and mediaevalism. As much of this as possible finds its way into my teaching. I’m fortunate to have taught postgrad courses on J.R.R. Tolkien and on the development of fantasy as a genre. I’ve also been able to inflict my passion for Old and Middle English language and literature on undergraduates.
Right now I’m writing a book on Tolkien’s theories about the creation of imaginary worlds and am working on a project on ecology in science fiction and fantasy.
